Classification of Wastes and Reasons Why We All Should Care About It

There are reasons why you are here. Whether just have some interesting about wastes, finding references for your homework as a student or just want to read another perspective to the make your research finished.

No matter what are your intentions, but believe it or not, whether knowingly or not, I believe that you would want life with better environmental conditions. Especially those that discuss all things related to the trash.

In this article, there are three main topics that I will give to you which are the definitions of waste, reasons why you should care about it and the last, I will give you the 3 common types of waste.

Let’s jump into them one by one!

Definitions of Waste

Talking about the waste, indeed, there are already many theories and definitions that have been shared. And, from those references, they can be explained as follows:

Waste is the throwaway materials whether solid or semi-solid resulting from human or animal, discarded as unwanted things or no longer used. It is also known as a solid waste that consists of organic, inorganic waste and hazardous materials that are considered no longer useful and should be managed, so those can not to harm the environment and help protecting the development investments.

Waste also defined as unwanted residual material after the end of a process and mostly is a man-made concept, because in the processes of nature, there is no trash (only things that do not move).

At first, many have believed that it is a material that does not have value or are worthless for regular or main purpose in fabrication or use of defective goods or unblemished in the fabrication of manufacturing, surplus material, rejected and discharged.

Waste is something that is not useful anymore, discarded by their owners or the original users.

And, in the end …

… It is all up to you, how you want to interpret or define what waste is. From all definitions above and other that have not been mentioned, it seems clear that waste is a resource that is not ready for other uses. Therefore, with the development of science and technology, we (the whole world) are required and have obligation to find a solutions, so that its existence does not spoil ourselves and of course the environment.

Why you should know and care about wastes?

You surely and most likely know Logan from X-Man, right? In addition to a strong character, he seems to be very interesting to have a super power that can heal himself in just a few seconds, automatically. Even, in a fraction of seconds?

Unfortunately, the environment we have been living in, for raising and playing with the children, working to support your life and so on, does not work like that.

Nature may be very strong, but it looks like “Logan” had taken its power.

In different parts of the world, rampant disease and natural disasters often happening when nature seeking for its balance. Is it wrong or we are the ones who unconsciously conceptualize various such conditions?

We all affect the environment. In fact, every inch steps we take are contributing whether it is good or the opposite. If we make the environment suffers, basically we actually make ourselves as it is.

And, I believe that it is not something that needed by anyone in this world.

As early as possible we should start thinking about the impact of decisions and actions we take. Of course, in this case both the government as policies maker, business people who are not only concerned with profit and all of us should already have to take steps to minimize the effects we created.

I don’t know what the discoveries of science and technology in the future about Mars or other planets as an alternative of our new place, until this day, I still think that the earth is the only one of our best heritage we must guard.

We will never need of one or even a million other planets for the inhabitants that still have the same greed. Useless!

Take a look at our modern lifestyle we are glorifying about. With the increasing of growth population, food demands, housing, transportation and so on even bigger and greater than before. And, it may become more difficult to predict.

Through the United Nations, governments and organizations have been reminded of the concept of sustainable development. Development of all aspects of human in today’s life without having to reduce and threaten the needs of the generations in the future.

It is simply because, basically, we should acknowledge ourselves that we are not the owner of earth. We are merely the caretakers in this very big house.

Our attention to the environment, prior to the waste problems, could also create better opportunities for the future generations to provide them with various natural resources, so they can also pass them on later. And, talk about it, we have been reminded to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle things that will make us become more responsible as a human being.

Remember, no matter how small our actions are, it will give the same effect or even bigger than what you ever might be think.

For your start, getting to know the various type of waste

In order to preserve our environment to have more better life, it is advisable for you to know the various types of waste, which is what you producing every day. Maybe not all of them, but hopefully only a few. And this is also the main reason why this article is presented.

Surely, talking about this means that you will also be facing with several categories or classifications of waste, and there are many of them. I will just give you not more than three types of waste that are general and often you hear, those are as follow:

a. Waste based on sources (Origin)

In this first category, the waste based on its sources can be divided into some that are purely comes from nature, human, consumption, nuclear activities, industry, and mining.

For your convenience, take one example in this category such as wastes that comes from nature. Yes. Nature also produces them. How nature could ruins itself?

No. No. No!

Of course, it takes a lot of in-depth research for this. But, as far as I know, these wastes actually helped and is needed by nature such as falling leaves.

Obviously, the leaves will decompose by soil organisms and can be used again as a food for the trees. Although not the same, wastes produced by human can also be utilized as such. For example, the feces we produce will resulting gas that can be used for fuel and many others.

b. Characteristic of wastes

There are two main characteristics of garbage you already know that organic and inorganic waste.

Organic wastes are the same as above example which is can undergo a process of decomposition (degradable) and can be processed any further either done by humans and or by the nature itself.

Meanwhile, inorganic wastes are the opposite. They are not easily to decompose and undegradable, thus require advance special treatment that typically involve the presence of the machine (technology) in order to reduce its negative impact for the environment.

A simple example for this is a plastic bottle that if you just thrown it away or leave it in the wild, it will take hundreds of years to become decomposed. Waste like this also usually has a value of money and often used commercially as a beverage bottle packaging products either from plastic or glass, food wrappers, and much more.

c. Forms of waste

Talking about form, there are three types of waste that can be generated which are solid, liquid and gas.

You must have been knowing that the manifestation of solid wastes are all the materials that thrown away other than natural human waste as described earlier, and in addition to those made from liquid. Example that are closest to us is the household plastic wastes, metals, glasses, and so on. And speaking of the constituent materials, solid waste is classified into two categories which are organic and inorganic waste (see above explanations).

More about solid wastes, if we classified on its ability to be decomposed by nature (Biodegradability), it can also be subdivided into 2 types which are Biodegradable, that the process of biological either aerobically or anaerobically degradable flawless and Non-Biodegradable that brought us to the various types of waste that can be recycle and reuse, and Non-Recyclable materials such as tetra packs, carbon papers, thermo coal and so on.

It has been very boring, hasn’t it? Calm down! I still believe that your knowledge certainly can save the world.

Liquid waste itself is the opposite of the above explanation. And, even some of them should be avoided as containing dangerous pathogens resulting from the toilet and the sink.

Regarding on gaseous waste, you can take an example as we refer to the term of emissions which usually associated with pollution. For example, the gas produced by vehicles (pollutants).

In our everyday lives, more wastes are found coming from various industrial activities where the number can be very large such as mining, manufacturing, and also consumption.

In fact, it could be that all these industries product wastes at one point, the quantity will approximately the same amount with consumption.

Now, not only this will be your turn, but also all of us.

Let’s recognize more about these 3 types of waste and also other types that have not mentioned in this article. And, equally use this knowledge to become more caring human being and being more responsible for maintaining the sustainability of best quality environment.
